Chili Cook Off & Annual Meeting

  • 21658 Garanry Creek Drive Queenstown, MD 21658 (map)

We are returning to one of our favorite venues, the DNR site on the Wye River.  We have the lodge, aka Duck House, for our exclusive use.   As part of the event we will hold a short annual meeting to elect next year’s officers.

Hopefully the beautiful Fall colors will still be around to enjoy the lodge and the many scenic trails on the island.  If you want to avoid the drive home Saturday evening or would rather not spend the night on your boat, we have reserved the overnight dormitory accommodations in the lodge and adjoining bunkhouse.  The overnight accommodations are limited to 12 people, so please indicate in your RSVP the number of overnight bunks you want.

This will be the last formal raft for the year and the facility is an easy dinghy ride from Granary Creek just outside the inlet to the lodge.  There is a dock in the inlet in front of the lodge to tie-up your dinghy.  Wye Island is also accessible by car from a bridge located at the north end of the island. More detailed directions by land and sea are included below for your reference.

Warm up that famous family chili recipe!... Awards will be given for the best of the best!  The club will provide the fixings (crackers, cornbread, grated cheese, sour cream), the drinks, utensils and napkins.  If there are other condiments or side dishes that you like with your chili, please feel free to bring them.  Please do not feel obligated to bring a pot of chili, there will be plenty for all to share.  If you are bringing chili, please bring it in a crock pot to keep it hot.  There is a 4-burner stove and oven in the lodge kitchen if there is any last-minute prep to be done or cornbread to be warmed up or baked.

After we have enjoyed sampling each other’s chili and quenching the fire in the belly with a few beers, a judging panel will award prizes for the best chili, the hottest chili and most unique chili.  After dinner we will convene the club's annual business meeting in accordance with the club by-laws, to review the club's activities over the past year, recognize the contributions of club members and the outgoing officers, and vote on the nominations for club officers for 2019.

We have had a great season and hope you'll make it to the last formal on-the-water event of the year.  If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Vice Commodore Bob Rectanus by e-mail at VC@HSA1.org and note if you want bunks in the lodge for the night.
